I had the opportunity last week to give a presentation to 4th and 5th grade students at Daniel Wright and Riverside Elementary Schools in Dublin on Wednesday February 12th. Ohio education standards for 5th grade students state that they are to learn the various components of an ecosystem and their functions. The students were shown real world examples of aquatic ecosystems, organism interactions and the invasive species that can disrupt their balance. They also learned about the methods that MBI uses to sample fish assemblages and the importance of these surveys. The students were also introduced to the fishes that are found in their own backyards.
